Aaldering Vineyards and Wines
Peripatetic Eben Sadie is back in this year’s guide’s five-star rankings with his 2002 Columella (the maiden 2000 conquered in 2003). Having hit the headlines as Spice Route’s talented young maverick, Sadie left after five vintages, setting up shop in a humble, whitewashed Perdeberg bodega. His love affair with the warm Swartland led him to sunbaked Priorat in Spain, where he has another humble, stone bodega to vinify his Dits del Terra grenache/carignan blend from 4ha of ‘young’ vines (60–80 years!). Without ‘letting things slip’ here, Sadie is now ‘often’ in Spain. And a new disciple of biodynamic winegrowing. ‘Anything less is just McDonalds. With biodynamic, it’s possible to take winemaking to the next level. Watch me, I’m going to blow the roof right off.’
