Despite an inauspicious start (some fruit rotted on the vines) Henk Wentzel calls 2004 ‘a year to be remembered for good, well-ripened reds’, which, for the first time, went through fully automated fermentation tanks. It was also the year the winery, its members now up to 72, celebrated its 40th anniversary. A bundle of appropriate gifts preceded the occasion — Bonnievale was named winner of the Robertson Block Competition for the 2nd year running; its wines had a first-time listing on SAA; and Michelangelo judges presented the cellar with a gold medal. Interestingly, Wentzel sees a marketing opportunity in rosé: ‘It’s growing worldwide.’ Another Wentzel observation worth noting: ‘National weather-station data shows Bonnievale is one of the coolest wine districts in SA.’
