Cabrière Estate
Owner: Harold Johnson
Wine Maker: Karl Lambour, with Jacques Viljoen (both Jan 2000)
The longest, most mixed-up harvest I’ve ever worked,’ says Karl Lambour of 2004. Yet individual parcels of grapes proved remark able, the winemaker says. Aromatic sauvignon reminiscent of 97; a rich, almost oily wine from one char don nay block; an excep tional viognier (bought in); shiraz and merlot that shone. (With said char donnay and viognierear marked for the lower-priced Tin Mine blend, it’s under stand able why Lambour reck ons Zevenwacht over-deliv ers at its price-point.) To high light a style-change for the flag ship range (riper pick ing, only free-run juice), a strik ing new front-label has been launched. Lambour is looking for ward to 2005: new farm manager Phillip Myburgh’s attention to aesthetics/vineyard man agement augurs well; as does new cheesemaker André Kruger — his commit ment to hygiene and precision ‘has paved the way to increased awareness of the same in our cellar’.
