“Alkmaar” is a boutique vineyard located on the horseshoe-shaped road known to the Wellington community as the ”Perdeskoen”, which partly encircles the Blouvlei area.
In 2003, the seven ha farm, with existing plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, was acquired by Bouwer Nell, a man driven by his vision to create wines of outstanding quality. Ever-mindful of this ambition, Bouwer carefully nurtures the vines in his small vineyard, resulting in an excellent quality fruit, which contributes towards fine wines of abundant character.
The first wine produced here was dubbed “The Old School Master” as a tribute to ”Meester” Stucki a schoolmaster from Alkmaar, Holland, who (in 1862) established the first Dutch school in the Blouvlei district, and gave the farm its name. The residence at Alkmaar, which was also originally built by Stucki has been lovingly restored by the Nell family. In our vision to produce fine handcrafted wines from our family boutique vineyard, we have now moved our attention to restoring a historic out-building to form part of our maturation cellar and cellar.
