What response to expect from internationally acknowledged class act Kanonkop when asked about its winemaking philosophy, after decades of producing fine wine Co-owner Johann Krige replies: ‘To increase minimum quality requirements year on year — ask Michael Schumacher.’ And what has this champion of the Cape’s F1-wine-circuit recently done to tweak its performance What many other competitors have: refurbished its processing cellar to incorporate hand-sorting tables; and brought on board a dedicated viticulturist (Koos du Toit, freeing winemaker Abrie Beeslaar to concentrate on vinification and elaboration, under the eagle eye of veteran Beyers Truter, now acting as a consultant after 20 years full-time on the estate). Which is to say, Krige & co have nothing out of the ordinary to up their performance. How do they stay ahead of the field then Terroir Undoubtedly. Great vineyards But of course. Winemaker Youthful, and still fairly new in the seat, but looking good. And Technology. From the industrial heartland of the US. Krige reveals: ‘I wore the T-shirt for ages. Now I finally got me a Harley-Davidson.’
